Carolyn Kaplan is Counsel and Chief Sustainability Officer for Nixon Peabody, LLP, the first such position in a law firm. In that role, she leads the firm’s Legally Green® initiative, assisting clients to create long-term value through sustainable business strategies, partnering with leading organizations on sustainability initiatives, and implementing sustainable policies and practices throughout the firm.
Carolyn is recognized as a leader in driving sustainability practices in the legal industry. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Law Firm Sustainability Network, a nonprofit organization focused on developing key performance indicators and best practice guidelines, fostering knowledge-sharing, and recognizing sustainability innovations in the U.S. legal sector. She previously served as a member of the Boston Bar Association’s Sustainability Task Force and California’s Steering Committee for the State Bar Task Force on Sustainable Law Practice.
Carolyn also currently serves on the Sustainability and Climate Change Committee of A Better City, a Boston-based nonprofit organization that provides business and institutional leadership relating to transportation, land development, and infrastructure investments.
Carolyn brings nearly 25 years of experience in environmental issues to her position, having started her career at ICF Inc. She is the former co-chair of the Renewable Energy team within Nixon Peabody’s Energy and Environmental practice. She has a B.A. from Cornell University and a J.D. from Boston College Law School.
Carolyn is a frequent speaker at conferences, seminars, and other industry events.
